We are so happy announce that we’ll be holding an event to raise funds for Ourmala in February, especially designed for yoga teachers and those in training. Our Refugee Awareness for Yoga Teachers course will be held on February 7, 2016 at Hackney City Farm in East London.
The day will be led by Emily Brett, yoga teacher and founder of Ourmala. In the afternoon, we are honoured to announce that we shall be joined by the brilliant Heather Mason, one of the leading lights in Yoga Therapy and founder of The Minded Institute. Heather will be giving a lecture on the neuroscience of trauma and how we can use Yoga specifically to help create resiliency in the traumatised brain.
Ourmala has been dedicated to providing yoga classes for refugees and asylum-seekers in London since 2011 and this course is based on good practice for working with individuals who have experienced atrocities such as torture, sexual violence in conflict and human trafficking as well as our own practical experience.
As you will appreciate, teaching yoga to this group is not like teaching a standard public yoga class. Some individuals may be clinically traumatised and highly vulnerable, many are not. Either way, there are many cultural, gender and practical considerations to be taken into account to ensure that as yoga teachers we are teaching to the best of our ability, taking our duty of care seriously and always putting the wellbeing of our students above all else.
All funds raised will help refugees and asylum-seekers rebuild their lives in our own back yard – London – through Ourmala’s work.
Places are limited so do book soon if you’d like to come.
