Our model

OURMALA’s Yoga classes are based on Ashtanga Yoga (physically demanding) and Mindfulness (meditation techniques)

Yoga is a deeply relaxing, healing and restorative practice. At OURMALA, we use our privilege and practice to enable some of those in our community who have suffered most to access the benefits of Yoga.

Yoga is much more than just asana (postures). For those that work at OURMALA, it is part of our personal practice.

YOGA STABILISES AND EMPOWERS

  • It improves physical and mental health, calms the mind, soothes anxiety, depression and physical pain and can lead to more fulfilled and active lives
  • Yoga builds self-esteem, increases inner resilience, peace of mind and confidence
  • It provides tools to cope with everyday life and greater ability to sleep through the night

GOOD NUTRITION

  • Good nutrition gives our service users more control over their health and energy levels. Our lunch at Hackney City Farm is often the only hot lunch a woman has in a week

PRACTICAL SKILLS – ENGLISH CLASS

  • Helps language skills so our service users can participate in society more
  • Reduces their isolation caused by the language barrier
  • Empowers them to lead more fulfilled lives

ACCESS PROGRAMME

  • Connecting people to critical services to meet primary needs as well as opportunities such as education, training and volunteering to help fulfill potential

COMMUNITY

  • OURMALA builds a welcoming community
  • We create a space where the individuals who come to our services are not stigmatised with the labels refugee or asylum-seeker
  • We hold events that provide opportunities for our service users to integrate with community groups they would not usually meet on a level playing field
