After a refreshing August break, we’re delighted to update you on our YOGA FOR REFUGEES fundraiser we held back in June. Celebrating the true values of Ourmala – compassion, interconnectivity and social justice – it was an inspirational evening of yoga and music held in London’s stunning Lindley Hall, attended by over 300 people. In addition, yoga teachers across the country held events in solidarity to support the cause. The grand total raised from across the UK was £5,000.
£5000 will allow us to deliver our work, such as Therapeutic Yoga classes for survivors of torture, specific classes for refugee and asylum-seeking women and our Mums and Babies Community day, which we run in partnership with The Helen Bamber foundation.
But we still have a long way to go.
When people arrive here to seek asylum, their lives are perilous. Most are recovering from atrocities, such as torture, sexual violence in conflict and human trafficking and they have fled for their lives. Most we work with are registered with the UK Home Office. Far from being safe and secure, they are still desperately in need of practical and emotional support.
Ourmala helps those in need rebuild their lives and integrate with UK society. YOGA FOR REFUGEES helped raise awareness about this situation and the positive work of all our team. But we still need to raise more money.
So what’s next?
We are more determined than ever to ensure we achieve our mission of helping refugees and asylum-seekers in London. Specifically, we want to ensure that the women, men and children on our waiting list who so desperately need our support get help.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be launching an Ourmala crowdfunding website to build on the momentum and raise more funds.
YOGA FOR REFUGEES would not have been possible without our sponsors, Amir Amor of Rudimental, yoga teachers, musicians, brands, our huge team of volunteers and of course all those who came along on the night. Huge thanks for your continued support.
